4 April: View and respond to background movie on The Odyseey. LAB- Research myths, legends and tall tales.
5 April: Read The Odyssey Part IA. Identify heroic traits of Odysseus as well as more modern heroes from books, movies and real life.
6 April: Notes on epics. Epic essay organizer. Read The Odyssey Part IB. List the journeys and illustrate them.
7 April: Read The Odyssey Part IIA. LAB- Historical Context PowerPoint (1 slide on art/architecture, 1 slide with a map of Ancient Greece, 1 with famous Greek heroes, 1 with famous monsters, 1 about the Trojan War and 1 on Ancient Greek gods)
8 April: Read The Odyssey Part IIB. The Odyssey assessment. Homework: Type your Epic Essay

Short Stories

11 April: Read "Sonata for Harp and Bicycle" RN p33-41. Identify common elements in ghost stories. Write your own ghost story. Turn in notebooks for grading!
12 April: Read "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" RN p65-70. Peer edit ghost stories. Homework- type up final drafts of ghost stories.
13 April: Read "The Jade Peony" p79-87. Draw a windchime that represents the theme of family and cultural heritage in the story, as well as one that represents you.
14 April: Read the beginning of "The Most Dangerous Game" RN p95-106. Draw a map of Ship Trap Island.
15 April: Finish reading "The Most Dangerous Game" RN p 106-115. Write an alternate ending to the story.

18 April: Read "An Invalid's Story" in the textbook. Write a letter as though you were Thompson describing the events on the train.
19 April: Choose a short story out of the textbook that we haven't read. Take notes on it (plot summary, main characters, literary elements). Create a Voki that describes short stories, using the notes you took. Fill out the short story organizer.
20 April: Write short story essay based on your organizer from yesterday. Assessment Review
21 April: Short Story Assessment. Embed Vokis onto writing folder wiki.
22 April: 12p Dismissal Present Vokis

17 May: Respond to Spark 113. Read CH 11. Choose one of the projects below and work on it (Due Friday).
  • Create a replica of the island in Lord of the Flies based on details from the story. Write a one-page paper explaining the significance of the island and its physical features for the story.
  • Construct a replica of the Lord of the Flies. Write a one-page paper explaining its symbolic significance.
  • Develop masks for the major characters in Lord of the Flies. By changing masks, illustrate the changing of the characters. Demonstrate to the class. Write a one-page paper explaining the symbolic value for the masks in relation to the characters.
  • Prepare an island feast for the class, using foods or simulations of foods that were detailed in Lord of the Flies. Explain the significance of each food item in a one-page paper.
  • Videotape interviews with the major surviving characters appearing on a talk show to relate their adventure to the t.v. audience. Use events from the book. Write a one-page paper explaining the significance of the events you choose to share with the t.v. public.
  • Write three conflicting newspaper accounts by three different reporters detailing the vents on the islands as told by to the media by the boys after being rescued.
  • There are no female characters in Lord of the Flies. Write a 2-3-page paper, speculating upon how the story would have changed with the introduction of a female character. Also, try to determine why Golding did not include female characters and whether this is a compliment or an insult to women.
